都会のシドニーから何もない田舎町へ単身赴任でやってきた小学校教師のジョン・グラントは、クリスマス休暇で恋人に会うためシドニーに帰る途中、とある町に一泊することになる。町の住民たちのもてなしでビールを浴びるように飲んだジョンは、狂乱のギャンブルやカンガルー狩りの興奮にも魅了され、そのまま町に1週間滞在することになるが……。
