放射性物質の拡散により、地上での呼吸が不可能となった近未来。絶滅寸前に陥った人類は社会再建のため、優秀な遺伝子を持つ人々を地下の人工冬眠施設で眠らせていた。その維持管理を任された技術者バウアーとカートライトは、半年ごとに目を覚ましながら、生存可能な最後の場所と冬眠中の人々を守り続けている。しかしある時、自分たちの睡眠装置の1つが故障してしまう。酸素が完全になくなるまであと2時間に迫る中、2人は生き延びる方法を求めて奔走するが…。
