オクラホマ・シティ。ウェイン・ロジャースと妻のディーディーとの間には長女エミリア、長男イーサン、二女ジャニナがある。この２人は元アメリカン・バレエ団のダンサーであったが、ディーディーがウェインとの恋愛中に妊娠したために正式に結婚し、バレエ団から身を退いたのだった。エミリアは容姿も美しく、父母の血をひき、バレリーナになる素質が十分であった。アメリカン・バレエ団が公演のためやってくることになり、ロジャース一家は、この公演をこぞって見に行き、ディーディーは久方ぶりの親友エマの舞台姿に感激するが、内心には複雑な思いが交錯していた。
