2010年にメキシコ湾沖で発生し、日本でも大きく報道された海底油田爆発事故を映画化。2010年4月20日、メキシコ湾沖約80kmに位置する石油掘削施設「ディープウォーター・ホライゾン」で、海底油田から逆流した天然ガスへの引火による大爆発が起こった。海上一面が火の海と化す最悪な状況の中、施設内に閉じ込められた作業員たちは被害の拡大を食い止めるべく奔走し、決死の脱出を図る。「ローン・サバイバー」「バトルシップ」のピーター・バーグ監督が、人為的ミスの連鎖や親会社と下請け会社の確執といった小さな原因の積み重ねが未曾有の大事故へと繋がっていく様子を緊張感たっぷりに描き出す。主演のマーク・ウォールバーグをはじめ、カート・ラッセル、ジョン・マルコビッチら実力派キャストが集結。
