由緒ある英国バッキンガム宮殿である日、大事件が。王室諸氏の記念撮影中、落雷で全員が感電死してしまったのだ。慌てた英国は、急いで王の後釜を据えるのだが、それは偶然抜擢されたアメリカの観光客で、彼は単なる品のないピアノ弾きだった……。珍妙な王位据え替えを軸に展開するコメディで、監督は「スティング」「ミラグロ／奇跡の地」等の脚本、「メジャーリーグ」の監督として名高いＤ・Ｓ・ウォード。Ｊ・グッドマンのキャラクターに頼りすぎたせいか、少しアイディア倒れの感があるが、気楽に見る分には良い。脇役にＰ・オトゥール、Ｊ・ハートといった曲者が並んでおり、こちらの怪演は楽しめる。

DCコミックスの誇るスーパー・ヒーローを巨費を投じて映画化した大作。ゴッサム・シティの闇に跳梁し悪を粉砕するバットマンと犯罪組織の新ボス・ジョーカーとの戦い。単純明解な娯楽編にはせずにひねった作品を目指していたのか、バットマンの誕生の秘密やジョーカーの設定などかなり暗めで、マニアックな仕上がりになっている。ニコルソン怪演。

In ancient times, a man named Claus, who delivers toys in his small village, fulfils his destiny to become Santa Claus after meeting an expert toy-making elf, Patch, in the North Pole. In the present day, Santa Claus has become overwhelmed by his workload, and the disgruntled Patch flees the workshop to New York City. Browning is a PI with a bad cold, who's sent to investigate a case by a mysterious client. He stumbles across the body of a young woman and is stabbed to death, and when he wakes up in heaven, they tell him he's "marginal material," and they can only decide on his final destination through one last assignment: to go back and solve his own murder. As a dog. A cute fluffy little dog (Benji). Undaunted, Browning begins to investigate the case as best he can around his canine disabilities (dialing the phone presents a special challenge) to solve the murders, save the girl, and see justice done.

The film is based on the actual events of the Portland Spy Ring trial in the U.K. A disgruntled Navy Clerk is transferred to a secret research establishment and is subsequently black-mailed/paid by Czech intelligence to procure secrets for them. He seduces the secretary who controls the most secret documents, and they enjoy the fruits of their treachery until the British authorities begin to close in on them.
