A young woman joins the military to be part of something bigger than herself and her small-town roots. Instead, she ends up as a new guard at Guantanamo Bay, where her mission is far from black and white. 主人公のクレア・ベネットが、妻に先立たれた男に恋とも同情ともつかぬ感情を抱いて近づいたり、かと思えばその亡くなった妻の生々しい幻影に付きまとわれたりする、どことなく滑稽な彼女の日常を描く。介護人でもあるしっかり者の家政婦に支えられながら、クレアが人間的なつながりを探し求め、自分を許せるようになるまでを綴った救済と再生の物語。
