川岸奈緒（桜井ユキ）は夫に裏切られ東京から故郷・伊根町に出戻ってきたシングルマザー。奈緒は昔看護師になる夢を抱き資格を取ったが、母の死を機に「死」に恐れを抱きその夢を諦めていた。奈緒は近所の老人の通夜の席で三上高志（加藤シゲアキ）に出会う。三上はおよそ医者らしくない医者でしかもよそ者だったが、トクじい（柄本明）ら地元の年寄りから慕われていた。ある日奈緒は近くに住む元看護師の老婦人・早川順子（風吹ジュン）が三上と関わりがあることに気づく。二人の間には過去の不幸な事件がもとで深い溝があった。早川の死期が迫る中、奈緒はある提案をする。それは奈緒にとっても新たな人生への第一歩だった。
