瀬戸内海に臨む女子高校に、東京から青年教師・南条が赴任してきた。南条の明るい人柄に生徒たちの人気が集ったが、清水巴だけは反抗的な態度を捨てなかった。運動会で、巴と南条が目かくし競争にコンビで出場することになった。ところが、勢い余って二人は来賓席に飛び込み、巴が気絶してしまった。医務室に運び込まれ、ようやく気がついた巴は、恥ずかしそうに南条に告げた。「先生、私、おしっこしちゃった」南条は仕方なく、巴に下着を買って来てやったのだが、この事が町中に広がり、南条を糾弾する職員会議が開かれることになった。南条は巴の恥をかばい真相を話さないために窮地に立ったが、巴が飛び込んで来て涙ながらに全てを語るのだった。この事件以来、二人は爽やかな師弟愛で結ばれるようになった。夏休みになって、南条は、同僚の女教師・増川先生から講習に誘われて上京したが、突然、巴が現われた。それは南条と増川の同行を知った上での行動だった。南条は困惑した。新学期が始まると途端に、南条と巴が東京に新婚旅行に出かけた、という噂が学校中に広まった。南条は少しも気にしない様子だったが、食当りで学校を休んでいるはずの巴が、馬を乗り回して遊んでいるというので、巴を探しに出かけた。南条は海辺で裸馬を駆って若さを発散させている巴の姿を見つけた。そして、今まで気がつかなかった巴の美しさに圧倒された。その時、巴は南条を馬に乗せると町を駆け抜け、校庭へ走り込んだ。驚き呆れる人々の眼。だが南条は「やっとウップンが晴れた」という巴を、愛しく思うのだった。巴はさらに馬を走らせたが、急に突び出して来たトラックを思わずよけた勢いで、二人は、馬から投げ出され、海に転落、巴は大怪我をした。南条の献身的な看病で、巴は数日後に元気になったが、南条は辞任して帰京することになった。「人を愛することは厳しいことだ。君のことを忘れなかったら、いつか迎えに来る」一緒に連れて行ってくれ、と頼む巴に、南条はこう言って、去って行った。
