1990年、アメリカ・ミネソタ州。刑事のケナーは、17歳の娘アンジェラから虐待を受けたと告発された、旧友のジョンを取り調べることに。ジョンは記憶が不確かながらも自らの罪を認め、どこか釈然としないケナーは、高名な心理学者のレインズに協力を要請。アンジェラをはじめ、ジョンの家族のことも調べて回るうち、彼らは事件が単なる家庭内暴力の問題ではなく、その裏に恐るべき闇が潜んでいることに気付き、愕然とする。
