ローマ、サベリ街の総合病院の小児科病棟。13歳の少女ヴァレンティナ、通称ピッピ（アレッシア・フガルディ）は生後3ヶ月で発病し、てんかんと診断された。小児精神科の若き医師アルトゥーロ（セルジョ・カステリットー）は、それが誤診であり、心の病であることを直観的に見抜く。彼は薬物を使わない心理療法で発作の原因を探ろうとし、ピッピとできるだけ長い時間を過ごすようにする。アルトゥーロはやがて、ピッピの苦しみは、愛のない生活を続ける母チンチア（アンナ・ガリエナ）と父マルチェッロ（アルマンド・デ・ラッツァ）の歪んだ関係を全身で感じ取った彼女が、いつしか自分が逃げ込める世界を作り上げてしまい、心の行き場を失った時に“発作”を起こすのだと確信する。ある日、彼は“スヌーピー”の本をおみやげにピッピを訪ねた。アルトゥーロは、彼が子供の頃に愛した挿話を話し、「かぼちゃ大王が夢をかなえてくれると信じて、かぼちゃ畑に座って大王を待っていた」と語る。この日を境に2人の間に温かい友情が育まれていく。
