オーストリアにある、山と谷に囲まれた美しい村ザンクト・ラーデグント。フランツとファニは出会ってすぐに結婚。しかしナチスドイツはオーストリアを併合し、1940年、フランツはエンス基地での軍事訓練に召集され、愛する家族と何カ月も離れて暮らすことに。彼は村に戻ると、教会の神父に兵役は断わると語る。フランツが兵役を拒否しようとしていることはたちまち村中に広まり、彼やファニは村民たちになじられる事態に……。
