Twentysomething Brooklynites Mara and Jo have been close friends since middle school. Gradually, it becomes apparent that the increasingly unstable Jo has troubles that may be the result of substance abuse, or an even deeper problem. Over the course of a decade, the more stable Mara tries to help.

In 1979, an Indian family moves to America with hopes of living the American Dream. While their 10-year-old boy Smith falls head-over-heels for the girl next door, his desire to become a "good old boy" propels him further away from his family's ideals than ever before.

潜入捜査中に亡くなった刑事ニック。だが、生前の刑事としての活躍や経歴を見込まれて、成仏できずに現世に紛れ込んでいる悪霊たちを逮捕しては霊界に送還する組織R.I.P.D.のエージェントにスカウトされる。1800年代からエージェントを務めている大ベテランのロイとコンビを組み、次々と悪霊を捕まえていくニック。その後、二人は霊界へと通じているトンネルから悪霊たちを現世に逆流させるという陰謀が進められていることを逮捕者から聞き出す。
