大正７年、春。女学校を出たての花村紅緒は、料理・裁縫は苦手だが、竹刀を持てば天下無敵、袴姿で自転車走らすハイカラ娘だった。そんな彼女の前に、伊集院忍という名の帝国陸軍少尉の許婚が現れた。早速、伊集院家で行儀見習いをすることになった紅緒だが、心の中では政略結婚を嫌い反発していた。ある日、紅緒は忍が芸者と親しくしているのを目撃し、ヤケ酒を飲み泥酔、軍人相手の喧嘩をし危ないところを忍に助けてもらうが、事件を雑誌掲載されたことから忍は小倉の部隊へ左遷されてしまう。
