In the late 1980s, Rose moves from the Ivory Coast to the Paris suburbs with her two young sons, Ernest and Jean. Spanning 20 years from their arrival in France to the present day, the film is the moving chronicle of the construction and deconstruction of a family.

Monique and Michel Pinçon-Charlot are a couple of French sociologists, famous for their work on the uber-rich. They have been in love for more than fifty years, and they enjoy a comfortable retirement in their lovely home in the Paris suburbs. A nurse's aid, Cathy lives alone. Too alone. When her sister, with whom she's had a falling-out, calls her for her birthday and invites her to the beach, Cathy is exhilarated. But the day gradually slips away from her.

When Alice sees Eric kissing another girl, she is devastated. To make matters worse, her rival runs with her in the same relay team. If Marie thinks that she is going to get away lightly after stealing Eric, she is mistaken. Alice might only be thirteen, but there are two things that she is sure of: she can run faster than Marie and Eric is the man of her life.
