1930年代、大恐慌下のアメリカ。身寄りのない少女アニーは、児童養護施設に暮らしながら、いつか両親が迎えに来ることを信じていた。そんなある日、施設に大富豪ウォーバックスの秘書というグレースが現われる。ウォーバックスは、世間から金の亡者と批判されがちな悪いイメージを改善するため、週末に施設の子どもをひとり屋敷に招こうというのだ。グレースは、一目見るなり気に入ったアニーを招待客に選ぶ。

米国ニュー・イングランド地方、アミティの小さな海水浴場でひとりの少女が鮫に襲われ、命を落とす事故が。警察署長のブロディは次なる犠牲者が出ぬよう、遊泳禁止を決定しようとするが、海水浴客がいなくなって町が不況に陥ることを恐れた市長の反対で失敗に。すると、今度は少年が犠牲になってしまう。ブロディは意を決して鮫を退治しようと、海洋学者フーパーや鮫狩りの専門家クイントとボートに乗り込み、海に出る。
