ウィル・フリーマン。38歳、無職、独身。ノース・ロンドンに住み、亡き父がクリスマス・ソングを一発ヒットさせたおかげでお気楽な印税生活を送っていた。ある日、ウィルは12歳の少年マーカスと出会う。マーカスはシングルマザーの母親フィオナのひどい鬱病に悩んでいた。そんな矢先、フィオナが自殺を図る。フィオナはウィルの素早い対応で事なきを得るが、マーカスは母をこれ以上一人にしておけないと考え、ウィルと母のデートをセッティングする。そうこうしてるうち、次第にウィルのアパートに入り浸るようになるマーカス。生活のリズムを狂わされ困惑するウィルだったが…。
