1984年のロサンゼルス・オリンピックで金メダルに輝いたレスリング選手、マーク・シュルツに届いた突然のオファーから始まる。有名な大財閥デュポン家の御曹司ジョン・デュポンが、自ら率いるレスリング・チーム“フォックスキャッチャー”にマークを誘い、ソウル・オリンピックでの世界制覇をめざそうと持ちかけてきたのだ。その夢のような話に飛びついたマークは破格の年俸で契約を結び、デュポンが建造した最先端の施設でトレーニングを開始する。しかしデュポンの度重なる突飛な言動、マークの精神的な混乱がエスカレートするにつれ、ふたりの主従関係はじわじわと崩壊。ついにはマークの兄で、同じく金メダリストのデイヴを巻き込み、取り返しのつかない悲劇へと突き進んでいくのだった…。
