ワシントンD.C.警察に勤めるダッチはうだつのあがらない内務調査室巡査部長。ある日、妻の乗った飛行機が墜落してしまうが、乗客名簿に妻の名は無く、チャンドラーという男の妻として搭乗していたのがダッチの妻らしい。悲しみに暮れる中、事件に疑惑を抱いたダッチは単身調査を開始する。そしてチャンドラーの未亡人ケイに接触するのだが、同じ境遇に置かれた二人は互いに惹かれ合う……。
