1942年9月。ナチス・ドイツの猛攻にさらされ陥落寸前のスターリングラード。そこへ送り込まれた新兵ヴァシリ。敵の銃弾が降り注ぐ中、死体に紛れて反撃の機をうかがっている時、同じように身を潜めていた青年政治将校ダニロフと出会う。ダニロフのライフルを借りたヴァシリは驚くべき正確さで敵兵を次々と仕留めていった。
