1969年、ノースカロライナ州の湿地帯で、裕福な家庭で育ち将来を期待されていた青年の変死体が発見された。容疑をかけられたのは、"ザリガニが鳴く"と言われる湿地帯でたったひとり育った、無垢な少女カイア。彼女は6歳の時に両親に見捨てられ、学校にも通わず、花、草木、魚、鳥など、湿地の自然から生きる術を学び、ひとりで生き抜いてきた。そんな彼女の世界に迷い込んだ、心優しきひとりの青年。彼との出会いをきっかけに、すべての歯車が狂い始める…。法廷で少しずつ語られていく、カイアが辿ってきた想像を絶する半生。浮かび上がる殺人の動機と、一向に見つからない決定的証拠。事件の真相に辿り着いたとき、タイトル「ザリガニの鳴くところ」に込められた本当の意味を知ることになる――。
