貧しいユダヤ人家庭に生まれたルース・ギンズバーグは、「すべてに疑問を持て」という亡き母の言葉を胸に努力を重ね、名門ハーバード法科大学院に入学する。1956年当時、500人の生徒のうち女性は9人で、女子トイレすらなかった。家事も育児も分担する夫のマーティの協力のもと首席で卒業するが、女だからというだけで雇ってくれる法律事務所はなかった。やむなく大学教授になったルースは、70年代になってさらに男女平等の講義に力を入れる。それでも弁護士の夢を捨てられないルースに、マーティがある訴訟の記録を見せる。ルースはその訴訟が、歴史を変える裁判になることを信じ、自ら弁護を買って出るのだが──。
