A lonely Russian man is trying to see his daughter, who lives with her mother far away in the USA.

Based on the motifs of M. Bulhakow's story with the same title. The thing about the scientist-zoologist Persikow, whose unique invention makes the rate of formation and development of organisms grow thousands of times. The experiment subjects eggs of the anaconda, which by mistake go to the mad director of the model chicken farm, dealing with rebuilding the hen population in the country. Irradiated reptiles, hatching from eggs, start to devour.

In the course of their conversations it transpires that the patient is a kind of philosopher, not without a gift for suggestion. In a while the doctor himself falls under his patient’s influence: he tends to relive that fatal night of June 16-17, 1918 when, without any investigation or trial, Tsar Nicholas II, who had recently abdicated, was murdered, together with his wife, daughters and incurably ill heir. Soon the doctor realizes that the tragedy of the last Russian tsar is in part his own tragedy, too...

Karen Shakhnazarov’s surreal satire of Communism follows an Everyman engineer named Varakin who arrives in a remote city where nothing quite makes sense, but everyone acts as if it does. He’s quickly drawn into the investigation of the suicide (or possibly murder?) of a local restaurant chef, Nikolaev – who may (or may not) be Varakin’s missing father. The more complex and absurdist the mystery becomes, the more poignant and plaintive Varakin’s predicament – “I have to get back to Moscow,” he pleads to no avail. Along the way we’re treated to a bizarre and wonderful sideshow of non sequiturs out of a Wes Anderson film, including an underground museum filled with a thousand years of real and imagined Russian history (“Here’s the pistol with which Urusov shot the False Dimitry II.”) Frozen in time, frozen far beneath the surface, the waxwork figures are strangely beautiful and forlorn, like Shakhnazarov’s marvelous and enigmatic satire of Soviet bureaucracy.

Leaving the seaside town at the end of the Great Patriotic War, the SS men hid lists of secret agents. A few years later, Sam Page, a former fascist mercenary Semyon Paygin, and two other agents come to the USSR in order to search for the archive. The film is based on a conflict between the director of a textile mill and the chief engineer, who regards the initiative of the director for automation of the enterprise as a projection project. However, thanks to young specialists, the director achieves the implementation of his plans by solving the demographic problem of the textile town and providing men with jobs.

There were three sisters — Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov. Vera, having survived unhappy love, goes to the monastery, where she gives birth to a child. The child dies, Vera commits suicide. Lyuba and grandmother attend church and maintain relations with priest Aleksandr. To Nadezhda that condemns their religiosity, it seems that Lyuba is in love with father Aleksandr. She comes home to him and demands that he stop dating Lyuba. However, it turns out that Aleksandr is in love with Nadezhda. Knowing him better, she reciprocates him, facing a difficult choice, Aleksandr breaks with religion.
