A mutation of the rabies virus, B249, has been transmitted to humans. The outbreak north of Sumatra needed only 20 days to expose the entire continent. オスマン帝国の小さな村で生まれ育ったアルメニア人の青年ミカエルは、1914年、裕福な家庭の娘マラルと婚約し、彼女の持参金を学資にしてコンスタンチンノープルにある帝国医学大学へと入学。その地でミカエルは同郷のアルメニア人女性アナと出会い、彼女に恋心を抱くが、既に彼女にはアメリカ人記者のクリスという恋人がいた。第1次世界大戦の勃発とともにアルメニア人への弾圧が強まり、彼らは過酷な運命を歩むはめとなる。

最愛の母が末期がんで余命を宣告され、ショックと不安を隠し切れない13歳の少年コナー。厳格な祖母とは反りが合わず、学校でもいじめられて孤立する彼は、ここ最近、毎夜悪夢にうなされていた。ある晩、不気味な大木の怪物が彼の前に現われ、「これから俺が3つの真実の物語を話そう。4つ目の真実の物語は、お前が話すんだ」と告げる。かくして、怪物とコナーの間で、摩訶不思議な物語が夜ごと繰り広げられることとなる。

1980年、マドリード。新進気鋭の映画監督エンリケ（フェレ・マルチネス）の元に、神学校の寄宿舎で共に少年時代を過ごしたイグナシオ（ガエル・ガルシア・ベルナル）が訪ねてくる。幼い頃の面影が全くないイグナシオにエンリケはとまどうが……。

After getting into a minor traffic accident, Pablo attempts to make light of the situation by asking the driver of the other car, Sonsoles, out on a date. An enigmatic tale of four people whose lives are intertwined by destiny are subject to the laws of fate. They discover that luck is something they cannot afford to be without as they gamble with the highest stakes possible in a deadly game from which only one of them will emerge intact.
