古い肖像写真の美女に恋をした青年が、時空を超えて憧れの人のもとへ会いにいく姿を描くSF恋愛映画の名作。母校で初演を迎えていた新進の劇作家リチャードのもとへ現れた老婦人は、金時計を手渡すと“帰ってきて”という言葉を残し去っていく。数年後、再び母校を訪れたリチャードはその町のホテルで一枚の肖像画に心を奪われる。そこに描かれた美女エリーズは、かつての老婦人の若き日の姿だった。日増しに膨れ上がる“彼女”への想いに苦しむリチャードは、ついに時間の壁を越えエリーズと出会う……。
