1979年にアメリカで実際に起こった事故を引き合いに、アメリカ政府がひた隠しにする秘密と、映画撮影に夢中になる少年たちが真実を暴く冒険と成長を描く。8ミリカメラで映画撮影をしていた6人の子どもたちのそばで、貨物列車の衝突事故が発生。貨物列車は空軍施設・エリア51からある場所へと研究素材を極秘に移送中だった。アメリカ政府が隠す秘密を目撃してしまった子どもたちのカメラには、事故の一部始終が記録されていた。

人間にペットとして飼われているが、TV番組のヒーローに憧れるカメレオン。車で飼い主と移動中に事故に遭い、入っていた水槽ごと砂漠に放り出されてしまう。初めて広い世界に出たカメレオンは途方に暮れるが、寂れた荒野の町“ダートタウン”にさまよい着く。酒場で町の住人たちにランゴと名乗ったカメレオンは、でたらめな武勇伝を語った結果、町の保安官に任命されてしまう。その頃、町は深刻な水不足に見舞われていた。

これが地球最期の日だ。地球に接近する巨大彗星に向け、核ミサイルでの迎撃作戦発動。しかし計画は失敗、彗星は無数の破片と化し地球に殺到する。降り注ぐ隕石の雨、パニックに襲われ逃げ惑う人々。そして人類の運命に止めを刺す、巨大隕石激突の時がせまる!!
