Joe—a down-on-his-luck truck driver haunted by the memory of his deceased wife and child—meets Julie, a spiritually gifted woman who enlists his help in a desperate effort to find the lost soul of her comatose daughter. 太平洋戦争末期、長引く戦争に終止符を打つべく、原爆の輸送という極秘任務に従事した米海軍巡洋艦の大勢の乗組員たち。当初の任務を無事達成した直後、日本軍の魚雷攻撃によって同艦はあえなく沈没。その後の5日間にわたる海上漂流生活の間に、飢えや渇き、サメの襲撃により、さらに多くの者が命を落とすなど、彼らは過酷な試練に次々と直面することなる。
