1961年、空軍でテストパイロットを務めるニール・アームストロング（ライアン・ゴズリング）は、NASAのジェミニ計画の宇宙飛行士に選ばれ、ヒューストンの有人宇宙センターで過酷な訓練を受けながら他の飛行士たちとの絆を深めていく。NASAが目指すのは、宇宙計画のライバルであるソ連もまだ到達していない月面着陸。ニールたちは使命感を胸に、この前人未到のミッションに挑んでいく。
