1930年代の上海で、茉（チャン・ツィイー）は母（ジョアン・チェン）の反対を押し切り女優への道を歩み始めるが、これからという時に妊娠してしまう。同じ頃日本軍が中国に侵攻し、失意の中茉は娘の莉（チャン・ツィイー）を生む。1950年代、莉は労働者階級の偉（ルー・イー）と結婚するが不妊症だとわかり、養女として花（チャン・ツィイー）を貰い受けるのだが……。

Our story derives from the period 1644, when the Ming dynasty was threatened with destruction.
