将来有望な若手政治家デヴィッドは、ある日エリースという美しいバレリーナと‘運命的’に出逢い、一目惚れする。しかし次の瞬間、突如現れた「アジャストメント・ビューロー（運命調整局）」と呼ばれる男たちによってデヴィッドは拉致されてしまう。彼らの目的は、本来‘恋に落ちる予定ではなかったデヴィッドとエリースを引き離し「運命の書」に記述された運命に従わせることだった。
