医学生のコートニーは、“人は死んだらどうなるのか？”という好奇心で禁断の臨死実験に挑む。心臓を止めて1分後に蘇生し、死後の世界を垣間見た彼女は突然ピアノを弾けるようになるなど不思議な能力が覚醒する。その驚くべき光景を目の当たりにした仲間たちは、徐々に臨死時間を競い合うかのように延ばしエスカレートしていくが、臨死から7分が過ぎた時、そこには想像もつかない恐ろしい代償が待っていた。
