TVドラマで、飼い主の少女ペニーを守るスーパードッグ役を演じるスター犬・ボルト。撮影所の外を知らない彼はドラマを現実と思い込んでいた。ある日、ボルトはドラマの中でさらわれたペニーを救おうと、撮影所を飛び出しニューヨークへ行ってしまう。初めて見る外の世界で、野良猫ミトンズやハムスターのライノと出会い、自分がただの犬だと知るボルト。ショックに打ちのめされた彼は、自力でハリウッドに帰ることになる。
