最愛の妻に先立たれて1週間。最近は認知症が進み、物忘れが激しくなった90歳の老人ゼヴのもとに1通の手紙が届く。それは、かつて彼と同様、アウシュビッツのユダヤ人収容所での地獄を生き延びた旧知の友人マックスからの手紙で、彼らの家族を殺した憎い元ナチス兵が実は正体を偽って現在も生きていること、そして、4人にまで絞られたその容疑者の名前と居場所が書き記され、ゼヴにその復讐をぜひ頼む、というものだった。
