1944年、ナチス・ドイツに占領されたワルシャワ。妻子がいる男性ステファンはレジスタンスである国内軍に加わるが、友人の妹アラに想いを寄せてしまうように。しばらくしてソ連の赤軍がワルシャワに進撃してくるという情報を得て、同年8月1日、国内軍はドイツ軍に武装蜂起する。だが赤軍の進撃はなく、ドイツ軍の圧倒的な攻撃力を前に劣勢を強いられる。さらに空からの爆撃によってワルシャワの町は徹底的に破壊されていく。

Operation Danube was the cover name for the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact armies in August 1968. The fleet of Polish tanks which arrive to liberate their neighbor, ostensibly threatened by a counter-revolution, includes the old tank nicknamed Ladybird, which is the last to leave the barracks.

Hans and Jan Bitner live separated from each other by an iron curtain. Hans works in an office in Strasbourg, he leads a quiet, almost monotonous life. Bitner is a Polish patriot, involved in the affairs of "Solidarity" and the fight for a free Poland. He lives in Sopot with his family. Seemingly, their lives are completely different, but there is one detail that connected their lives forever. Both will have to answer very important questions about their identity.
