とある精神科病院の建物が老朽化が進んだため、患者たちは新たな病院へ転院することに。かつて自らの赤ん坊を殺した罪に問われ、この病院に40年間も収容されていた老女ローズは、ただひとり移転に頑強に反対し、院長らを困らせていた。そんな中、ローズを問診することになった精神科医のグリーンは、彼女が1冊の聖書を大切に持ち歩いていることを知る。そこには、彼女の知られざる過去の秘密があれこれ書き記されていた。
