NYの美術館で絵画を観賞中、思いも寄らぬ爆破テロ事件に巻き込まれ、最愛の母を失ってしまった13歳の少年テオ。その後彼は、裕福なバーバー一家のもとに引き取られて新生活を始める一方、爆破テロ事件の際、間近に居合わせた老紳士から託された指輪を届けに行って、骨董商のホービーと知り合う。長らく行方不明だった父親のラリーが不意に姿を見せたことから、テオは、彼やその恋人とともにラスベガスへと移り住むこととなる。
