名門ハイスクールに通う奨学生チャーリーは、アルバイトで目の不自由な退役軍人フランクの世話を引き受けた。翌朝、校長の愛車がペンキまみれにされるという事件が起き、犯人を目撃した彼は、校長に呼び出される。犯人を明かさなければ退学だが、犯人を密告した場合ハーバード大学への奨学金も約束すると言われたチャーリー。悩みながらフランクを訪ねた彼は、有無を言わさずその足でニューヨークへの旅に同行させられる。
