Tells the story of the life and multifaceted heritage of Mirza Fatali Akhundzadeh , the founder of Azerbaijani drama, a great public figure, who left an indelible mark on the history of Azerbaijani and Middle Eastern literature . The film depicts three periods of the playwright's life - childhood, youth and old age.

"Buta" is the story of a lonely 7-year old boy (named Buta), who lives in a mountain village with his grandmother. He is befriended by an old man, a liquid soap merchant who once loved (and lost) Buta's grandmother. The old man's friendship and wise advice helps Buta to overcome his difficulties in life. Buta's grandmother, in the meantime, is weaving a special carpet in memory of Buta's mother. The carpet features a special pattern (also called "Buta"), which represents love. The boy is inspired by his grandmother's work, and decides to make his own "buta" made of rocks and stones, high on the top of the mountain...

Following the Khojaly Massacre, Ismayil, an officer tasked with collecting the bodies, crosses enemy lines to avenge the brutal murder of a local schoolgirl. There he gets captured by Armenians and waits for the day to be exchanged for an enemy POW.

Parajanov's visually ravishing 'tableaux vivants' tell Lermontov's romantic tale while Turkish and Azerbaijani folk songs transport us into its mystical landscapes.

The hero of the film tries to find the way out from his problems and difficulties.

A young boy through a period of transition. His last baby tooth, which symbolises this period, is sore. He is scared of pulling it out, of saying goodbye to his dead mother and to his childhood. No one understands him, be is deprived from material physical affection. He himself does not understand his father who has brought another woman home. He feels this is an act of betrayal towards his dead mother.
