マンハッタン。犬のマックスは毎日、飼い主ケイティが出掛ける日中、お留守番をしながら近所のペットたちと遊んでいた。ある日ケイティは保健所から大型犬デュークを引き取るが、マックスはデュークと仲よくなれない。近所のドッグランに行った際、野良猫のボス、オゾンの意地悪でマックスもデュークも首輪を切られ、2匹は動物管理局の職員に捕らえられてしまう。脱走したマックスたちはケイティの家に帰ろうと協力し合う。
