1978年、ノルウェー。兵役を終えて故郷の村に戻った青年ダグは、周囲となじめず、仕事も見つけられずにいた。そんなある日、村で数年ぶりの火災が発生、彼は消防隊長の父アルフレッドとともに必死の消火活動を行ない、火災を消し止めた。それ以来、村では不審な火災が相次ぐが、アルフレッドは年齢もあって消防への熱意を薄れさせていく。一方、ダグはそんな父の抜けた穴を埋めるように熱心に消防活動にいそしむのだった。
