氷河期。とある村の若者ケダは首長である父らと初めての狩りに出るが、バイソンの群れに襲われ、断崖絶壁から転落してしまった。気絶から痛みと寒さで目覚めた彼は、自分がひとり取り残されてしまったことを知る。程なく、傷つき弱った彼をオオカミの群れが狙うが、ケダは群れのボスを倒してなんとかオオカミたちを追い払う。だが、心優しい彼は手負いのボスにとどめを刺せず、アルファと名付けてともに旅をする。
