ある夜、プリンストン大学で教諭をする地球外生物学者、ヘレン・ベンソン博士の自宅にアメリカ政府のエージェントが突然やってきた。強制的にある非常事態への協力を求められたヘレンは1年前に他界した夫の連れ子であるジェイコブを隣人に預け、あわただしく公用車に乗り込む。すでに政府は軍を総動員出動させ警戒態勢を敷き、町は異様なまでに静まり返っていた。政府がヘレンのほかに核物理学・天文学・地質学などの権威を招集したのは、木星の外側で観測された謎の物体への対策を講じるためだった。小惑星と思われるその物体は想定外の進路を信じがたい速度で移動し、マンハッタンへと迫っているのだった。

夫の突然の他界に深く悲しみつつ、幼い娘ジュリアとともにニューヨーク行きの航空機に乗り込んだ航空機設計士の女性カイル。くしくもこの機は、彼女自身が設計した最新型の大型旅客機だった。そんな飛行中の機内からジュリアが姿を消してしまう。どういう訳か乗員乗客の誰もがジュリアを覚えておらず、乗客名簿にすらジュリアの名前はない。周囲から精神状態をいぶかしむ声も上がる中、カイルは必死にジュリアの姿を求める。

Their efforts constantly find the 'Duke Boys' eluding authorities in 'The General Lee', their 1969 orange Dodge Charger that keeps them one step ahead of the dimwitted antics of the small southern town's Sheriff, Roscoe P. Coltrane.
