The story begins with their first meeting and traces their years together when Thompson tried to keep Presley off drugs in the last years of his career.

マンハッタンのウエスト・サイド。イタリア系の若者からなるジェット団と、プエルトリコ系の若者からなるシャーク団は不良グループ同士、町で顔を合わせればにらみあうという一触即発の関係だ。しかし、ジェット団のリーダー、リフの親友であるトニーは、シャーク団のリーダーであるベルナルドの妹、マリアと出会って、互いに一目惚れしてしまう。やがてリフとベルナルドがけんかした末、ひとりが命を落としてしまう事件がおこる。
