江戸時代から続く栃木県の伝統工芸・小砂焼の窯元に生まれた、向井虎(谷英明)。田舎町で骨をうずめたくないと考えていた彼は、高校を卒業するや親の反対を押し切って上京する。冒険小説家の夢をかなえようと賞に応募するも落選、食べるための肉体労働にも疲れ、15年ぶりに故郷に戻る。疎遠になっていた旧友や勘当を言い渡した父と再会するも、ぎくしゃくしてしまう虎。誰にも本音をさらけ出せずにいた彼は、ある親子と出会う。
