人間が自宅にいるまま、身代わりロボット“サロゲート”を遠隔操作して外で働かせるのが一般化した近未来。犯罪、伝染病、人種差別が激減し、人類は理想的な社会を実現したかに見えるが、サロゲート排斥運動を続ける人々は独立区を築いている。FBI捜査官グリアーと女性の相棒ジェニファーもサロゲート同士でコンビを組んで働くが、サロゲート2体が破壊された事件の捜査へ。なんと2体とも持ち主は自宅で怪死を遂げていた。
