恐怖小説やSF小説の先駆者H・P・ラブクラフトの「ザ・カラー・アウト・オブ・スペース（宇宙からの色／異次元の色彩）」をニコラス・ケイジ主演で映画化したSFホラー。ネイサン・ガードナーと妻のテレサは子どもたちとともに大都会の喧噪から逃れるため、閑静な田舎に移住してきた。しかし、前庭に隕石が激突して以来、一家の生活は心と体に影響を及ぼす地球外変異体との戦いに明け暮れ、理想としていた静かな田舎暮らしは悪夢へと変わってしまう。ケイジがネイサン役を演じるほか、ネイサンの妻テレサ役を「レッド・スパロー」のジョエリー・リチャードソン、長女ラヴィニア役を「ビッグ・アイズ」「好きだった君へ P.S.まだ大好きです」のマデリン・アーサーがそれぞれ演じる。監督は「ハードウェア」「ダスト・デビル」のリチャード・スタンリー。

Marta and Jorge have been a couple for seven years. All their friends think they are living a perfect romance. Too perfect, perhaps, for the despair of all: Bruno, who is much younger than Marta but madly in love with her; Lígia, who is Bruno's sister and Marta's best friend and would love to see her brother happy; Carlos, Jorge's friend, who maintains a superficial romance with Lígia while secretly in love with Marta; and for Jorge himself, who is afraid this idyllic romance will imprison him and, convinced that his love and his lover's desire to marry will take away his freedom, decides to show her the way into Carlos arms.

Day breaks on the eighth floor in a suburban neighbourhood of Lisbon and 14-year-old Bruno’s grandfather is still in hospital. Doctors give him only a few days to live. The imminence of death and the void that it will leave force Bruno to become the man of the house, where he lives with his mother Mónica, who is in her 30s, and his three-year-old sister Érica.
