B級映画専門の音響効果音マンのジャックは、ホラー映画で使う音を求めて“風の音”を録音しに出かける。そこで車の川への転落事故を目撃した彼は、とっさに川に飛び込みサリーという女性を救うが、同乗していた次期大統領の有力候補は救えなかった。宿の部屋で事故の時に録音していた音を聞いていたジャックは、“銃声”の存在に気がつく。一方テレビでは、同じく偶然、現場に居合わせたというカメラマンが事故を語っていた。

夫婦生活に不満を抱えるケイトは精神分析医エリオットのもとへ通っていた。そんな彼女が美術館で出会った男性との情事のあと、剃刀を手にした女性に惨殺される。現場に偶然居合わせたコールガールのリズは、警察から疑いの目を向けられ、街中で危険な目に遭いながらも、ケイトの息子ピーターと組んで真犯人を追うことに…。
