ニューヨーク、ブルックリン。11歳の子ども同士が喧嘩し、片方が前歯を折るケガを負う。ケガを負わせてしまった側のカウアン夫妻がロングストリート夫妻の家に謝罪に訪れ、和解の話し合いが行われる。お互いに社交的に振る舞い、話し合いは冷静かつ友好的な形で淡々と進んでいくかに思われたが…。

元英国首相アダム・ラング（ピアース・ブロスナン）の自叙伝執筆を依頼されたゴーストライター（ユアン・マクレガー）。ラングが滞在する真冬のアメリカ東海岸の孤島に1ヵ月閉じ込められることと、締め切りまで時間がないことを除けば、おいしい仕事のはずだった。しかし、前任者のゴーストライターは事故で死んだという―。とにかく、気乗りがしなかった…。仕事を始めた直後、ラングに、イスラム過激派のテロ容疑者を‘不法’に捕らえ、拷問にかけたという戦犯容疑がかかる。しかし、この政治スキャンダルもまだ序章に過ぎなかった。
