Leon manages to get a new house in the country cheap, and the whole family finds out that a mysterious death occurred in it. No one but Leon wants to live there, and so, a wacky plan is conceived to make Leon change his mind about moving.

Leon is a gadget inventor, but when he uses them to help his son marry the banker's daughter, the results are per Leon's usual happenings. Once everything is cleared up, Leon and the banker shake hands and are enveloped in sparks from Leon's latest invention.

Dorothy reveals who she is, but Leon wiggles out of the situation in his usual wormy fashion.

To save expense, Leon Errol decides to get his daughter married. He picks a wealthy young man as the prospective groom, but his daughter's heart is set on somebody else. Leon pushes onward and rents an apartment for his daughter and chosen son-in-law, but his wife Dorothy thinks that he is setting up a love nest for another woman.

Faced with a police raid ordered by Errol's wife, turned Reform League president, the manager of the local burleque theatre sends one of the girls over to get friendly with Errol.

Florence (Florence Lake) has entered and won a radio contest sponsored by the company Edgar (Edgar Kennedy) works for, but the contest has a rule against employees or family members winning. Florence, determined to collect her prize, schemes to get Edgar fired.

Edgar, not willing to admit to Florence (Florence Lake) that they are broke, is forced by her to give Brother (Jack Rice) a $1000 check. Edgar, in an effort to get the money to cover the check, decides to pawn Florence's diamond bracelet. Edgar doesn't know that Brother (a real jewel) has already hocked the bracelet and substituted a paste one in its place.

The millionairess aunt of Errol's previously married wife is coming to visit, and since the aunt is dead set against divorce, the wife prevails upon Errol to pose as the butler, and brings back her inebriated first husband to pose as her current mate.

Leon's boss and his wife aren't getting along together, so Leon asks them to visit his home and observe how he and Mrs. Errol manage to keep the old knot tied. Before the couple arrives, Leon manages to get into a situation with a pretty, blonde neighbor, which leaves him having to introduce her as his wife when they do arrive. Neither Leon's wife, when she comes home, nor the neighbor's husband are too pleased with this arrangement.

Edgar's boss gives him a few days off as a reward for being promoted. His wife, Florence, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, think he has been fired for being too fat and, over his fruitless objections, put him on a strenuous reducing program that nearly kills him.

Edgar Kennedy, never the one to spend money on a project when he can do it himself and spend twice the money with disastrous results, forgoes hiring a builder to add a new room on the family abode, and contracts himself and family members to do the job. Edgar, doing any job is a recipe for failure, and when his ditsy wife, daffy brother-in-law and domineering mother-in-law are part of the construction crew, failure turns to catastrophe.

Comedic mixups are inevitable when Leon Errol borrows a car.

Rita informs Leon that, as a lark, he stole a valuable necklace at a dinner party the night before and she will return it, but Leon remembers nothing about it. Just then, as Leon is taking the necklace out of his pocket, Mrs. Errol arrives with Barbara, her cousin and Barbara's fiancee. Mrs. Errol decides to give the necklace to Barbara as a wedding present. Leon tells Rita he will retrieve the necklace and return it to her that night. That Leon ends up getting chased by a guard dog and accused by Dorothy of philandering and Rita is a crook is a foregone conclusion.

Leon, sight unseen, rents a room in his house to a professor, who turns out to be a beautiful blonde. This unforseen stroke of good fortune, to Leon's way of thinking, only lasts until his wife (Dorothy Granger) sees the "Professor." Harmony is restored, following a period of vase throwing, when the professor moves out.

Edgar's brother-in-law persuades Edgar to indulge in a little betting at the race track, and Edgar loses $900. While entertaining a banker to get on a loan, for a supposed worthy purpose, the bookie's henchman shows up demanding to be paid.

A beautiful redhead (Myrna Dell) comes knocking on Leon's door demanding the return of a compact dropped accidently in his pocket while they were dancing. But his wife (Dorothy Granger) has already discovered the compact and thinks Leon bought it as a gift for her. And then, to no great surprise, the redhead's jealous husband makes an appearance. Leon, before he is cleared of any hanky-panky with the redhead, nets two black eyes.

Edgar lets his brother-in-law borrow his car (mistake no.1), and soon gets a call from Brother that the car won't start. Edgar borrow's his neighbor's car (mistake no.2) to go haul in his stranded vehicle, and immediately wrecks it. He then goes to buy a replacement car for his neighbor from "Miracle Sam - The Used Car Man" (mistakes no.3 through no.8) and drives off without insurance. Meanwhile...Brother has gotten Edgar's car started, and anybody not anticipating the upcoming two-car wipeout collision between the cars driven by Edgar and Brother are watching their first Edgar Kennedy short.

There is movement afoot in Edgar Kennedy's house, where he lives with his wife Florence, and reluctantly with Florence's mother and brother. Without Edgar's consent, Florence, mother and brother have decided that Edgar will temporarily move in with brother, while mother will temporarily move in with Florence, giving mother's room to her visiting brother, Wilbur. Uncle Wilbur, an entrepreneur, promises to set brother up in one of his companies, making Edgar's dream come true of getting brother out of his house. But chain smoking Uncle Wilbur vows to renege on his promise unless Edgar can get him some cigarettes after he himself runs out. Edgar may have some problems as there is a cigarette shortage, every smoker clamoring for what few supplies there are. If Edgar can't get cigarettes, he may have to resort to Plan B, which may not be as easy as he imagines. Regardless, lazy brother may do whatever he can to thwart Edgar's plans if only to remain unemployed and in Edgar's house.

Max mistakes his son's acting for reality. When the play calls for the son to commit a murder (on a mannequin), Max winds up trying to hide the body from the police.

Stan and Ollie are salesmen attempting to sell a washing machine; they fail constantly after several near misses. One would-be sale has them carrying the machine up a large flight of steps, only to find out that a young lady wants them to post a letter for her. The boys later get into an argument knocking off each other's hats, which eventually involves scores of others. A police van eventually carts all those involved away except Stan and Ollie, who afterwards try to find their own headgear amongst the hundreds of others lying on the street.
