1979年にアメリカで実際に起こった事故を引き合いに、アメリカ政府がひた隠しにする秘密と、映画撮影に夢中になる少年たちが真実を暴く冒険と成長を描く。8ミリカメラで映画撮影をしていた6人の子どもたちのそばで、貨物列車の衝突事故が発生。貨物列車は空軍施設・エリア51からある場所へと研究素材を極秘に移送中だった。アメリカ政府が隠す秘密を目撃してしまった子どもたちのカメラには、事故の一部始終が記録されていた。

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind and water. It is cold enough to crack stones, and, when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the warmer south, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there.

When a man's daughter is suddenly taken during a championship hockey game – with the captors demanding a billion dollars by game's end – he frantically sets a plan in motion to rescue her and abort an impending explosion before the final buzzer.
