Ivan Sergeevich Kashkin — the bath attendant of the most prestigious metropolitan bath. It’s not easy to get to him: reputable diplomats, well-known footballers, and the heads of the ministry are seeking the honor to steam. But Kashkin himself does not need to achieve anything, everything is at his service — from black caviar to tickets to the conservatory. There were three sisters — Vera, Nadezhda and Lyubov. Vera, having survived unhappy love, goes to the monastery, where she gives birth to a child. The child dies, Vera commits suicide. Lyuba and grandmother attend church and maintain relations with priest Aleksandr. To Nadezhda that condemns their religiosity, it seems that Lyuba is in love with father Aleksandr. She comes home to him and demands that he stop dating Lyuba. However, it turns out that Aleksandr is in love with Nadezhda. Knowing him better, she reciprocates him, facing a difficult choice, Aleksandr breaks with religion.

Two young directors adapted the short stories of two Russian authors whose works had been banned for decades, and so their film ended up in the censor’s vault as well – for twenty years. Both tales look back to the post-revolutionary era: 'Angel' speaks tragically of the brutality and destruction of the time, and 'The Homeland of Electricity' captures its haunting grotesquery.

As Moscow is set ablaze by the retreating Russians, the Rostovs flee their estate, taking wounded soldiers with them, and unbeknownst to them, also Andrei. Pierre, dressed as a peasant, tries to assassinate Napoleon but is taken prisoner. As the French are forced to retreat, he is marched for months with the Grande Armée, until being freed by a raiding party. The French are defeated by Kutuzov in the Battle of Krasnoi. Andrei is recognized and is brought to his estate. He forgives Natasha on his deathbed. She reunites with Pierre and they marry as Moscow is being rebuilt.

In 1812, Napoleon's Army invades Russia. Kutuzov asks Bolkonsky to join him as a staff officer, yet the prince requests a command in the field. Pierre sets out to watch the upcoming confrontation between the armies. During the Battle of Borodino, he volunteers to assist in an artillery battery. Bolkonsky's unit waits in the reserve, but he is hit by a shell. Both Anatol and Bolkosnky suffer severe wounds. The French Army is victorious and advances on Moscow.

The Homeland of Electricity, Larisa Shepitko's adaptation of an Andrei Platonov story, was one of three short films collected in an omnibus work (Beginning of an Unknown Era) commissioned to honor the 50th Anniversary of the October Revolution. Censors eventually shelved the film and it would not see the light of day until well after Shepitko's death, during Mikhail Gorbachev's perestroika.

タルコフスキーとコンチャロフスキーという、旧ソ連の枠を脱して活躍することになる二大俊英が協力して脚本を執筆し、中世ロシア史上最高のイコン画家ルブリョフを主人公に、当時の社会と民衆の関わりを巨視的に捉えた歴史大作で、全体で二部構成。冒頭の、巨大な気球での飛行を試みる男たちの描写が象徴する閉鎖的な時代に、信仰と芸術の力によって風穴を開けたのがルブリョフと言える。彼は同窓の僧侶キリールに陥れられかけ、逆に大公の覚えめでたく宮廷画家となるが、連日、寺院の白い壁に向かい一筆も動かさない。神の愛を描きたいと願う彼の眼に時代は暗く映りすぎた。そして、公弟にそそのかされたタタール人が城を襲う（ここからが第二部）。ルブリョフは白痴の少女を救おうとして敵兵を討ち、後悔から筆を絶ち、修道院に戻るが、誰とも口をきかない。今や落魄の身のキリールとの再会……。ロシアはなお暗黒の中にあったが、大公は巨大な鐘の鋳造で威信回復を図る。今はなき名人の息子ボリースカの指導によって作業は開始され、ルブリョフはそれを興味深く見守る。秘訣を父に教わったという少年だが、実は鐘を作りたいばかりについた出まかせで、ようやく大鐘完成の暁に彼は真実を泣きながらルブリョフに明かす。彼は少年を賞賛し、自らも励まして言った。“君と一緒にやって行こう”……。１５年にわたる無言の行の末、最初に出た言葉がそれであった。彼は再び絵筆をとり、その後、それまでの白黒とうって変わった鮮やかなカラーで写し出される偉大な作品群を残したのである。観ることが主人公の忍従に重なるような重厚な作品だが、それ故にラストの解放感は筆舌に尽くし難い。丸裸の自己と神--という一対一の構図を発見するまでの確執を描くのは、後のタルコフスキー作品にも通じるテーマだ。

The first film of a four-part adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s 1869 novel. In St. Petersburg of 1805, Pierre Bezukhov, the illegitimate son of a rich nobleman, is introduced to high society. His friend, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, joins the Imperial Russian Army as aide-de-camp of General Mikhail Kutuzov in the War of the Third Coalition against Napoleon.

The film consists of three independent parts: "Workmate", "Déjà vu" and "Operation Y". The plot follows the adventures of Shurik (alternative spelling — Shourick), the naive and nerdy Soviet student who often gets into ludicrous situations but always finds a way out very neatly. "Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures" was a hit movie and became the leader of Soviet film distribution in 1965.
